A PARENT who helps primary school children plant, grow, cook and sell fruit and vegetables has been put forward as a children's champion in the Proud of Barnsley awards.

Sally Wheatley, 36, of Kingswood Crescent, Hoyland, helps out with the garden at Greenfield Primary.

Everything from strawberries to runner beans, peas, pumpkins, potatoes, radishes, tomatoes, cabbages, leeks, and sprouts have been planted.

The children used the strawberries to make pots of jam - one of which was used to bake with, the others will be sold to buy seeds for next year.
