A MINISTRY of Justice review is being carried out to find out how a convicted murderer could kill again while out on licence.

Ian Birley, 43, was released just 18 months before he went on to kill Wombwell man John Gogarty, 65, at his home on Marsh Street. He had served 17 years for the murder of Maurice Hoyle in Barnsley.

On Monday Birley, of Mont Walk, Wombwell, was given a whole life tariff - with no chance of release - at Sheffield Crown Court.

The Ministry of Justice this week confirmed a review of Birley’s case is taking place to make sure lessons are learned.

“Serious further offences are rare but each one is taken extremely seriously and investigated fully.”
