POLICE have launched an investigation after a 27-year-old man was found dead in the town centre early yesterday.

The man was found on a bench in the Courthouse car park close to the transport interchange.

The death is not being treated as suspicious but officers are now conducting enquiries to establish the circumstances.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said: “At around 1.20am yesterday morning (Monday August 20), police received a call from the ambulance service stating that a 27-year-old man had been found unresponsive on a bench in Regent Street, Barnsley.

“The man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. His death is not being treated as suspicious and police are conducting enquiries on behalf of the coroner.”
