Reds defender Adam Jackson wants to build on his debut and secure a starting slot in Barnsley's first eleven.

Jackson, 22, made his first Barnsley appearance in the Tuesday night loss to Newcastle.

The central-defender, signed from Middlesbrough, says playing against a north east club was a perfect start for him.

Darlington-born Jackson told the Chronicle: "I'm from up there and I have always had that bit of rivalry against Newcastle so it was great to come up against them.

"There were a few nerves but I was buzzing as well because I have been waiting for my chance to show what I can do.

"My debut has been a while coming but I loved every minute of it. I hope I have done enough to stay in for the weekend but that is for the gaffer to decide.

"I was gutted about the result but I was really pleased to make my debut.

"I think I am fitting in well. They're a good set of lads and I settled in really quickly."

Jackson feels like it is a good competition between him and Angus MacDonald for a starting berth alongside the established Marc Roberts.

He added: "It's healthy competition and everyone wants that in the team. You want to try and get your spot and keep it.

"Robbo was really good with me the other night and talked to me before the game and at half time to keep me organised."

Jackson enjoyed a loan spell with League Two Hartlepool United last season.

He feels football at this level will help him develop.

"I think anyone playing week in, week out in the Championship will benefit from it and improve as a player and it's no different for me," he added.
