ONE of radio’s most respected voices Dame Jenni Murray has been named the newest champion of The Civic’s ambitious expansion plans.

The Woman’s Hour presenter joins Michael Parkinson as well as Tala Lee Turton the Barnsley ballerina in championing the Civic’s £5m campaign to restore unused parts of the building.

The aim is to make it a world-class centre for the arts by 2023 through the fundraising campaign to open up the whole of The Civic, add a new theatre, café, and extended gallery.

"I think that's a terrific idea, I would give them all my support, absolutely," Jenni said. "The arts are just vital. My memories of the Civic are going there to see musicals with my mother, and she would tell stories that she remembered from her childhood.

"Access to the arts is incredibly important."
