A DISTRICT Judge has criticised the police for the time it has taken them to gather evidence in a fatal road traffic collision case.

Joanne Hirst, who was sitting at Barnsley Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, granted a four-week adjournment to the case of Simon Salter, the 52-year-old who is accused of hitting cyclist Jack Platt, 78, on Pontefract Road, Cudworth, on November 25 last year.

The CPS had applied for a three-month adjournment to allow the police more time to serve evidence - a move rejected by Ms Hirst.

She said: “The police have had more than enough time - three more months is not something I am willing to do. It is in no-one’s interest to delay.”

Salter, of Park View, Brierley, is charged with failing to stop after an accident, driving without a licence or insurance.

No pleas have been entered and he will next appear before magistrates on August 1.
