A MUSICAL creation has seen a group of Darfield youngsters shortlisted for a Young Champions award.

The Darfield Drummers, from Darfield All Saints’ Academy, took home the top prize in the SMAT Enterprise Challenge earlier this year, which saw them compete with other schools across the St Mary’s Academy Trust to create a music station for the playground.

The team of six first had success with its creation when music education company Louder Than Life tasked members with coming up with a music product.

It involved them designing a product, marketing it, and then doing research and costings to put together a Dragon’s Den style pitch.

Teacher James Butterworth said: “We are overjoyed the children have been recognised.

“Because they won the Louder Than Life competition we did a best of the best across the academy, and All Saints won that too. They were really ecstatic.”

The Drummers team, made up of Zack Bailey, Harry Holmes, Max Emeny, Tadgh Gosney, Ty Miller Hincliffe and Lily-Jaide Procter-Morton, convinced a panel of four their creation was the best.

“To be shortlisted for the Young Entrepreneur Young Champions award is really double recognition for them. It was something which was completely out of their comfort zone which challenged them and I think that made it more rewarding when they did go on to win.

“They also knew they were there to enjoy the day too, and that attitude was also important.”
