YOUNG riders from Barnsley have been cycling to success as part of the Schools Yorkshire Tour this week.
The South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership (SYSRP) team was on hand to support the large-scale cycle baton relay that saw school children from across Barnsley borough get on their bikes. The schools involved were Meadstead Primary Academy, Royston St John the Baptist Voluntary Aided Primary School, Athersley North Primary and Holy Trinity ALC.
It is hoped that the event has helped to encourage people to take up cycling on a regular basis.
Joanne Wehrle, manager of SYSRP, said: “We are proud to support the SYT which is a wonderful event.
“Cycling not only helps young people stay active, it also improves air quality outside schools and reduces traffic congestion. It’s a great event and it’s fantastic to see so many of our schools taking part.”
The SYT, which started in York on June 10, has been developed by 11 local authorities and various partners to follow on from the success of the Tour De Yorkshire.
The baton passed through Barnsley and on to Rotherham and Sheffield this week, before finishing with a celebration event in Doncaster on July 2.
