PLANS to demolish the Kings Head pub at Mapplewell and build a Sainsbury's Local would have been refused - but it's been taken out of Barnsley Council's hands.

Punch, which applied for the planning permission, has gone straight to appeal with the planning inspectorate when the council delayed making a decision.

Councillors decided not to vote on the plans last month while they investigated whether the vehicle entrance could be moved from Darton Lane to the quieter Croft Drive.

It was due to go back before councillors on Tuesday, and they took a vote to refuse the plans in their current state, but it is academic as it will now be decided on appeal.

The pub is due to close this weekend.
