Labour has gained two seats in the local elections after Allan Hampson was elected in the North East ward and Richard Riggs in the Dodworth ward.

Dave North and Brian Perrin, who both represented Barnsley Independent Group, stood down before the election.

Labour held on to 17 seats with Couns Charlie Wraith, Martin Dyson, Roy Miller, Linda Burgess, Alan Gardiner, Ralph Sixsmith, Tim Shepherd, Margaret Sheard, Anita Cherryholme, Chris Lamb, Jenny Platts, Karen Dyson, and Dick Wraith all re-elected.

Malcolm Clements, Roya Pourali, Dorothy Parkin-Coates and Kevin Williams all held seats for Labour after previous councillors stood down before the election.

Labour has strengthened its majority in Barnsley Council, which has now increased to 47.

The Conservatives held two seats with Paul Hand-Davis and Andrew Milner elected in the Penistone East and West wards respectively.

UKIP was unsuccessful in gaining a seat but candidates finished second in nine wards.

The electorate was 178,964 and the turn out was 56.2 per cent.

Before the election, Barnsley Council was made up of 53 Labour councillors, four Conservatives and six independents.

This now stands at 55 Labour, four independents and four Conservatives.

In the parish elections, Pat Doyle, Susan Hardwick, Ashley Peace and Davina McLeod were elected to Brierley Town Council in the Brierley Ward.

Oliver Denton, Judith Kimberley and Stephen Webber were elected on to Penistone Town Council in the Thurlstone and Millhouse ward.
