A LANDMARK pub will be consigned to history if plans to replace it with new homes are approved by Barnsley Council.

Anthony Youel took over The Monkey in Thurgoland in 1999 and ran it as a bar and restaurant for several years. He now uses it mainly to showcase artwork after custom dwindled.

Mr Youel wants to pursue his artistic career in Cornwall and the planning application to Barnsley Council proposes the site be redeveloped with four homes featuring five or six bedrooms.

Mr Youel is a former coal miner from Dodworth who moved into the pub after running a grocery business.
