DRIVING instructors descended on Oakwell when the BBC Children In Need Big Learner Relay hit Barnsley this week as part of a 3,000-mile journey to raise money for the charity.

The driving instructors are performing a ‘relay’ transporting a special ‘top box’ domed sign from the top of a driving instructor’s car from one driving lesson to another around England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

The Big Learner Relay hit Barnsley on Wednesday where it started with lead driving instructor Rachel Yarwood-Murray.

She said: “My car took the top box from Sandal Castle in Wakefield to Barnsley Football Club where we were met by the Mayor of Barnsley who handed over the box.”

From Oakwell the relay headed to Brodsworth Hall in the next stage of the route, which took many months of planning.

The grand finale will be a lap or two around Silverstone Race Circuit next Friday, the day of Children in Need.

The relay was inspired by Louise Walsh who started the event five years ago. Since then The Big Learner Relay for Children in Need has raised more than £300,000.
