13:44pm: Hello and welcome to the Chronicle's coverage of Barnsley's crucial derby against Paul Heckingbottom's Leeds United at Elland Road which kicks off at 3pm.

13:47pm: It is a massive game for the Reds for several reasons as they are currently third-bottom in the Championship and two points adrift of safety while they will come up against the man who was their head coach for two years before making the controversial February move across Yorkshire.

13:48pm: The Royston man, 40, led his hometown club to promotion and the Johnstone's Paint Trophy, both at Wembley, before leaving for Leeds on February 6.

13:53pm: Heckingbottom took with him assistant Jamie Clapham, sport scientist Nathan Winder and analyst Alex Bailey.

13:53pm: He left Barnsley a point and a place clear of the three-team relegation zone following just one win in his last 16 games in all competitions, which had brought only eight goals.

13:57pm: Team news in a few minutes

14:03pm: Barnsley team: Davies; Yiadom, Lindsay, Mills, Fryers; Hammill, Gardner, Potts, Mahoney; McBurnie, Bradshaw.

14:04pm: Subs: Walton, McCarthy, Pinnock, Cavare, Hedges, Moore, Moncur.

14:05pm: So three changes for the Reds. Matt Mills replaces Adam Jackson at centre-back, Connor Mahoney comes in for George Moncur and Tom Bradshaw replaces Kieffer Moore up front.

14:06pm: It will be Mills’ and Bradshaw’s first start for two months and Mahoney’s first for the club.

14:12pm: That seems like a change to 4-4-2 then which is a change from Morais' usual 4-4-2.

14:14pm: Leeds team: Peacock-Farrell; O'Connor, Pennington, Jansson, Pearce; Vieira, Phillips; Saiz, Hernandez, Alioski; Roofe

14:15pm: Leeds subs: Lonergan, Cooper, Anita, Forshaw, Sacko, Lasogga, Ekuban

14:18pm: There's some surprise in the press room by the decisions of Heckingbottom and Morris. Leeds seem to have changed to 3-5-2 while Barnsley have dropped Moncur and Moore who have been two of their better players recently

14:19pm: Moore doesn't have a great goals record, three in 15, but he has troubled defences in recent weeks and set-up chances for others.

14:20pm: Moncur has been a driving force in midfield for the Reds, adding a lot of creativity

14:20pm: But Bradshaw and Mahoney have waited a long time for this opportunity so let's see how they do

14:21pm: Heckingbottom is still one of the most successful managers ever to occupy the Oakwell hotseat, achieving the club's first and second Wembley wins, a first cup success for more than a century, and a promotion having been bottom in December before stabilising in the Championship.

14:25pm: But he is also now one of the biggest pantomime villains, having done the unthinkable and joined a club he claimed several times to hate in the build-up to derbies against them.

14:26pm: At his pre-match press conference on Thursday, Heckingbottom said he wanted Barnsley to stay up and that he thought that they would but said he would be focused on beating them today. He added: "I've played against Barnsley before and I've played and managed against loads of former clubs. It's not that new. The difference is I am a Barnsley lad, I have loads of friends and family connected to the club, and I've only just left."

14:28pm: Heckingbottom has just been announced on the PA system as Leeds' head coach, to pantomime boos from the away end

14:30pm: Asked about the Barnsley fans in the away today, he said on Thursday: "I am expecting a bit of barracking from the away end. The reaction from people I know and people I don't know who I have bumped into since I left has been really good. But I am sure it will be different on Saturday."

14:33pm: Heckingbottom also expressed his anger the Barnsley statement released after he left, saying the club was shocked and that the board 'worked tirelessly' to make signings in January. He said: "It was bang of order, some of the things they said. They know that. They just wanted to save face. It upset me. I don't usually pay attention to what other people say, apart from when it affects my family in a negative way. It was trouble caused by people not being big enough and brave enough to admit what had gone off."

14:43pm: Since arriving at Elland Road, Heckingbottom has picked up just two wins in 13 games, with four draws and seven defeats leaving him with ten points. His win percentage of 15 is the worst on record of any Leeds boss apart from Brian Clough and Darko Milanic who each managed fewer than ten games.

14:43pm: Heckingbottom took over when Leeds were tenth and said his aim was to close the seven-point gap between them and the play-offs but instead it has widened to 15 points and they have moved down to 14th. He has won two, drawn two and lost two of his six matches at Elland Road so far.

14:44pm: Only one of his matches, a 1-0 success over Brentford, has brought a clean sheet while they have not won in four, losing three, since beating Bolton on Good Friday. Leeds are still eight places and 16 points clear of their near neighbours Barnsley.

14:47pm: With speculation mounting about his future, Heckingbottom said: "I need to win this game for my own good, regardless of who it is against."

14:48pm: Heckingbottom signed every player in the current Barnsley squad except goalkeepers Adam Davies and Nick Townsend as well as veteran winger Adam Hammill.

14:48pm: Davies said in the build-up to this game: "Hecky was great with me and I don't have a bad word to say about him. I can't thank him enough but we won't be pals during the game and I want to get one over on him. It will obviously have an extra bit of spice with what happened with Hecky. I hope the fans show him respect but I can't see it because he's gone to one of the biggest rivals."

14:51pm: Defender Liam Lindsay added: "We just need to win, it doesn't matter which manager we are playing against. I am grateful he brought me to the club but it's just business."

14:51pm: Heckingbottom's replacement Jose Morais inherited a side who had won only once in 17 games, scoring nine in that run, and had just slipped into the relegation zone for the first time since August under caretaker Paul Harsley.

14:52pm: Morais believes the players will be motivated against their former boss. He said: "You never know your players enough because, when they play against you, they will probably show you what they really are. When they play for you, they want to please you so much that sometimes they are not showing you everything. Hopefully, the team that he built will reward him with a performance that will make him say: 'wow, these players are much better than I thought."

14:52pm: Morais acknowledged the Reds side was 'his team' in reference to Heckingbottom, and added: "He did a good job. He left the team in the best position he could. In terms of the table, we weren't in a good position when he left and we are not in a good position now, not yet."

14:52pm: Morais believes Barnsley's task will become a lot clearer after today's fixtures and insists they need two wins from their remaining four games to stay up. He also believes they can already be safe by the time they visit Derby County for the final game on May 6. Before then, they visit Leeds today and Nottingham Forest on Tuesday before hosting Brentford on April 28.

14:52pm: A defeat for Barnsley could leave them five points adrift of safety but victory might lift them out of the relegation zone if Bolton Wanderers or Birmingham City fail to win.

14:52pm: The Reds will be hoping their local rivals Sheffield United do them a favour today, as they visit fourth-bottom Birmingham, and that Sheffield Wednesday can win at home to Reading who are currently five points above Barnsley.

14:52pm: Head coach Jose Morais will also hope that promoted leaders Wolves, managed by his Portuguese compatriot Nuno Espirito Santo, can win at fifth-bottom Bolton.

14:52pm: Bottom two Burton Albion and Sunderland face each other at the Stadium of Light today knowing one or both of them could be relegated by 5pm.

14:53pm: Heckingbottom was at Oakwell on Saturday for Barnsley's 2-2 draw against fourth-bottom Bolton Wanderers.

14:53pm: The Reds led through Gary Gardner's opener, only for George Moncur to concede a penalty for pulling a shirt which was converted in the 82nd minute before the visitors took the lead in the 85th.

14:54pm: Oliver McBurnie scored the equaliser in the 93rd minute, which was his eighth goal in 12 starts for the club. That is more than half the total the Reds have mustered in that time and more than they managed as a team in the 13 league games before he signed. Despite playing mainly on the left wing, the Leeds-born striker's goals have won his side eight points without which they would be bottom.

14:54pm: The Portuguese has won two of his 11 games so far, losing five and drawing four while the Reds have been more free-scoring under him with 14 goals so far.

14:54pm: Since Morais took over, only bottom club Sunderland have picked up fewer points than the Reds but, if the season had started then, Heckingbottom's Leeds would be below them on goal difference, having played an extra game.

14:54pm: Morais has had a good recent experience of a Yorkshire derby, as his side won 3-2 at home to Sheffield United earlier this month, coming from behind late on.

14:55pm: Leeds have won three of their last four matches against Barnsley, with the exception being at Oakwell last season when Heckingbottom's Reds won 3-2 on Sky in January. Leeds won 2-0 on their return to Barnsley in November with first half goals from Samuel Saiz and Ezgjan Alioski. Heckingbottom is shown remonstrating with the Leeds bench earlier this season.

14:55pm: Barnsley have only won one of their last nine matches at Elland Road since 1990, a 2-1 success under Keith Hill in November 2011 thanks to first half goals from Ricardo Vaz Te and Craig Davies who is the last Red to score there. Charlie Taylor scored an own goal in their 2-1 loss last season.

14:55pm: Defeats to Leeds in April were a crucial part of Barnsley's relegation from the Premiership in 1998 and the last time they went down from the Championship in 2014. Another today could also prove a devastating blow to their survival hopes.

14:55pm: Barnsley have won just three of their last 28 matches in all competitions. They have taken the lead in four of their last six games but conceded an equaliser on each of those occasions and only won once.

15:00pm: The teams are out

15:01pm: I can already hear plenty of chants directed from the away end. I'll add them to this feed if I hear any clean ones

15:01pm: UNDERWAY

15:02pm: The first to notice is that Connor Mahoney appears to be playing in the middle and not on the wing

15:02pm: It looks like a 4-5-1 with McBurnie on the left and Hammill on the right

15:03pm: Mahoney seems to be playing just behind Tom Bradshaw with Potts and Gardner further back

15:03pm: We'll have to see how Bradshaw gets on on his own up front, he's played there a lot but Kieffer Moore is surely more suited to that role

15:04pm: 2 Mahoney takes the first corner of the match, it is over everyone and cleared then Gary Gardner fires well over with the first shot of the match

15:05pm: 3 Huge chance for Leeds. Matt Mills makes a terrible mistake against his former club and is robbed on the edge of the box by Ezgjan Alioski who goes clean through but fires wide

15:06pm: It was an overhit pass by Yiadom to Mills but a bad mistake by the centre-back playing for the first time since Morais' first game

15:07pm: So Barnsley get away with one there, it should be 1-0 to the hosts. Mills will have to do a lot better than that for the remaining 85 minutes

15:08pm: 7 Barnsley win their second corner, Mahoney takes and it is cleared after some head tennis. But the Reds now have another corner

15:08pm: This time it's from the left and Adam Hammill will take it

15:09pm: 8 The corner is just over Oliver McBurnie's head, hits Kemar Roofe and is collected by Bailey Peacock-Farrell the goalkeeper

15:10pm: 9 Another chance for Leeds. Kalvin Phillips meets a left-wing cross 12 yards out and heads a fairly difficult opportunity over the bar

15:12pm: Barnsley have been competitive in the first ten minutes, but it is the hosts who have carved out the two chances of the match so far. Although one was gifted to them by their former player Matt Mills

15:13pm: The Whites are playing a 3-5-2 formation today with wing-backs, with Heckingbottom possibly hoping to outflank his former side and give Hammill and McBurnie a torrid time defensively on the wings

15:15pm: The game has settled down a little bit now , with Leeds having most of the ball so far

15:17pm: So far Barnsley haven't really got to grips with the 4-5-1 they are being asked to play, with Mahoney the attacking midfielder in place of George Moncur

15:18pm:

GOAL!
Tom Pearce . 1-0 Leeds

15:20pm: It's the teenage left-back's first career goal. He pounced on a loose pass near the halfway line and was allowed the run about 40 yards to the edge of the box and find the bottom right corner

15:20pm: 'You're going down' chant the home fans

15:21pm: 20 Leeds almost double their lead from a corner, with shots from Ezgjan Alioski and Samuel Saiz both blocked

15:21pm: Barnsley are under pressure at the moment, they need to hang on in there

15:24pm: 22 Barnsley come close to an equalise. Adam Hammill swings in a low cross from the left which almost sneaks in the bottom left corner but Bailey Peacock-Farrell gets down to his left to tip it around the post

15:24pm: 23 Adam Hammill has a shot from 30 yards but it is blocked by Pontus Jansson

15:25pm: The Leeds fans taunting the subdued away end with : 'shall we sing a song for you?'

15:27pm: Going back to Connor Mahoney, it's a big ask to to get a 21-year-old winger who has not started a league match in more than a year to play as an attacking midfielder with so much pressure on him to create something

15:28pm: He may well come up with the goods, but it's a massive risk by Morais especially with the in-form George Moncur on the bench

15:29pm: Mahoney gets involved with some good passing between him and Potts leading to Bradshaw trying to latch onto a ball in the box but he is easily tackled by the much bigger Pontus Jansson

15:30pm: 28 Mahoney's corner is headed away. Barnsley are dominating the corner count but none of them have led to a chance

15:31pm: 30 Yet another Mahoney corner is flicked on by Mills but it is blocked and was going wide anyway. Then it is cleared

15:32pm:

YELLOW CARD
Ronaldo Vieira gets the first booking of the game for flattening Andy Yiadom about 40 yards from the Leeds goal

15:33pm: 32 Adam Hammill's free-kick is headed clear. But this has been Barnsley's best spell so far

15:33pm: The Reds are yet to carve out a chance, with the closest being a cross by Hammill which almost went in

15:34pm: 33 Now they have a half-chance as a decent move ends with Potts trying his luck from 20 yards but it is straight at Bailey Peacock-Farrell who catches easily

15:35pm: But this is encouraging for Barnsley. They are having much more of the ball and attacking more now, with the home fans getting frustrated by some misplaced passes

15:36pm: Into the last ten minutes of the first half now, can Barnsley level before the break?

15:37pm: 1-1 Own goal by Paudie O'Connor!

15:38pm: A terrible slice into his own net from a Zeki Fryers cross and just the slice of luck Barnsley needed

15:38pm: The away end is awake now with 'you're not signing anymore' and 'we love you Barnsley'

15:41pm: So one of Leeds' young players given a chance by Heckingbottom has scored his first career goal but another has put through his own net

15:42pm: Zeki Fryers has had a good few minutes. He set up the leveller and has now just produced a really good tackle on the edge of the box on Ezgjan Alioski

15:43pm: Just a few minutes left in this half now, and it is the away end making all the noise apart from some mumbling and grumbling among the home fans

15:44pm: Oliver McBurnie has had a quiet match against his hometown club but he actually played a key role in the goal as he started the move with a good run past a defender

15:46pm: Connor Mahoney seems to have moved onto the right wing now, with Adam Hammill playing in the middle, and he wins a corner which he takes and sees headed away

15:46pm: We're now into two minutes of added time

15:47pm: 45+1 Mahoney nearly scores his first Reds goal as he cuts into the box and shoots from 12 yards but Bailey Peacock-Farrell makes an excellent save diving down to his right to push it wide

15:48pm: 45+2 The referee judges that the goalkeeper was fouled from the resulting Hammill corner

15:48pm: HALF-TIME: Leeds 1, Barnsley 1. The Reds struggled early on but have come back very well and could be leading

16:01pm: An update on scores in the relegation fight. Former Barnsley captain Marc Roberts has levelled for Birmingham against Sheffield United (1-1) and Bolton trail 2-0 to promoted leaders Wolves

16:02pm: Reading, who could still get dragged into trouble, trail 1-0 at Sheffield Wednesday while Sunderland are 1-0 up against Burton Albion in the battle of the bottom two

16:04pm: The second half is about to start at Elland Road

16:05pm: SECOND HALF UNDERWAY

16:06pm: Barnsley will be really encouraged by their final 20 minutes of the first half and will be looking to take that momentum into the second session and get what could be a massive win

16:07pm: The line-up looks the same as the one which ended the first half with Adam Hammill the most advanced of a central three, with Gardner and Potts behind him

16:08pm: Leeds have dominated the ball in the first three minutes after the interval without really venturing into Barnsley territory

16:10pm:

GOAL!
Ezgjan Alioski

16:11pm: Oh dear Matt Mills. He should have gifted the hosts a goal early in the second half now he has in the second. He should cut out a long ball down the left wing but is beaten to it by Kemar Roofe who powers into the box and squares for the Macedonian to tap in from five yards

16:13pm: Barnsley have a goal ruled out for offside

16:13pm: Oliver McBurnie thought he had scored against his hometown club but the flag went up

16:13pm: It was a tap-in from close range after Mahoney exchanged passes with Yiadom and fired in a low cross

16:15pm: 55 Roofe gets loose again and whips in a low ball from the right but a good saving tackle by Yiadom puts the ball behind

16:17pm: Leeds are having a good spell now with a series of corners. The latest one is by Pablo Hernandez and headed over

16:18pm: Matt Mills really not having a great time out there. Morais decision to play him instead of Ethan Pinnock will be questioned should Barnsley lose, as will the dropping of Kieffer Moore and George Moncur

16:19pm: Morais has three attacking options on the bench with Moore, Moncur and Ryan Hedges

16:20pm: Leeds are having lots of the ball now, Hammill concedes a free-kick on the right wing

16:21pm: 61 Lindsay heads away a free-kick by Pablo Hernandez

16:21pm:

SUB OFF
Connor Mahoney

16:21pm:

SUB ON
Kieffer Moore

16:22pm: Moore's first contribution is to head a corner away. He will certainly add to physical threat for Barnsley

16:22pm: Mahoney really struggled at first on his full debut out of position in the middle but looks much better on the right and was only denied a goal by a sensational save on 45 minutes

16:23pm: Barnsley are now playing 4-4-2 with Moore and Bradshaw up front, Hammill on the right and McBurnie still stuck out on the left

16:24pm: 63 Ezgjan Alioski fires wide from 25 yards out

16:24pm: Leeds have really benefitted from their change of formation from 3-5-2 to 4-2-3-1, since then they have been well on top in the second half

16:26pm: 65 Barnsley have their best chance of the second half as Zeki Fryers' cross reaches Brad Potts 15 yards out but is effort is deflected and loops nicely into the arms of Bailey Peacock-Farrell

16:27pm: It was about this time in the first half that Barnsley began to recover from a poor start and put real pressure on their hosts, and they need it to happen again

16:28pm: Update from elsewhere: Bolton are 4-0 down, Birmingham are drawing, Reading are 2-0 down and Sunderland are beating Burton 1-0. That means the Reds would still be just two points off safety with defeat today and could climb out of the bottom three on Tuesday at Nottingham Forest

16:29pm: But this is such a good chance to get something against an off-form mid-table side with nothing to play for and, if they lose, Barnsley will rue missed chances, defensive errors and selection

16:29pm: Good work by Fryers and McBurnie results in a corner

16:30pm: 71 Hammill's corner is easily cleared

George Moncur

16:32pm: Surprising. George Moncur will add a lot of creativity and threat but taking off a striker for a midfielder when trailing is not the most attacking move

16:34pm: The Reds have now reverted to a 4-3-3 with Moncur the most attacking while McBurnie and Hammill are wide

16:34pm: It was a frustrating afternoon for Bradshaw, on his first start for two months he was barely given any service up front on his own

16:35pm: On the pitch, the action has really quietened down, Both sides are occasionally getting to the opposition penalty area but can't seem to break through the defensive line

16:36pm: Barnsley will have to throw men forwards which will leave them vulnerable to a counter-attack goal

16:36pm: We're into the final 15 minutes of what has been a frustrating Yorkshire derby so far for Barnsley

16:37pm: Bad news that Birmingham City have taken the lead against Sheffield United. They will be three points clear of the Reds if the scores remain the same

16:38pm: 78 Kieffer Moore has just produced one of the most extraordinary misses you will ever see. He has put the ball back across goal from two yards out after meeting a low cross from Adam Hammill

16:39pm: That is such a bad miss. Literally an open goal from two yards out.

16:39pm: It looked as though he totally mistimed his shot and just fired it back across goal

16:40pm: That could come back to haunt the Reds badly if they do not get something out of this game

16:40pm:

16:46pm: 87 Brad Potts' cross is easily collected by Bailey Peacock-Farrell

16:47pm:

YELLOW CARD
Adam Hammill is booked for diving after going down next to Matthew Pennington in the box looking for a penalty

16:47pm: That was a good move with Moore heading on to George Moncur who slipped in Hammill but it looked a desperate dive

16:49pm: Leeds haven't played particularly well today, other than starting each half well, but they have punished enough of Barnsley's mistakes and got away with enough of their own to lead going into injury-time

16:51pm: 90+1 Adam Forshaw has a chance to make it 3-1 for Leeds but curls over from 15 yards out

16:52pm: Leeds have won a corner and it's going to be a big ask for Barnsley to get the ball up the other end now

16:53pm: FULL-TIME: Leeds 2, Barnsley 1.
