Barnsley will be looking to win their second leg at Walsall on Thursday rather than trying to defend their 3-0 first leg lead, says head coach Paul Heckingbottom.

The Reds surged ahead in the tie at Oakwell on Saturday and are close to booking a place at the League One play-off final at Wembley on May 29 against either Millwall or Bradford.

"We're over the moon but it's only half-time," said Heckingbottom.

"We've put ourselves in a good position but we have not got what we're after yet. We have to go to Walsall with the same mindset and the same focus and determination.

"Our instructions for Thursday will be exactly the same: go and win it. How do you set your team up to defend a 3-0 lead? You don't. You just go and win it."

Heckingbottom, from Royston, was full of praise for the almost 14,000 home fans, most of whom stayed to clap the players off after the final whistle. He said: "It was the best atmosphere I've seen at Oakwell for a long, long time. The most pleasing thing is that the players have sent the fans home happy and the fans have had the chance to thank the players for the good season."

The margin of victory could have been greater had winger Lloyd Isgrove not had what would have been his first Barnsley goal ruled out for offside at 0-0 with replays showing it was the wrong decision.

Heckingbottom said: "I try to keep stuff like that out of my mind in games but I have been told it was onside. We reacted positively and got the goal soon after. The main reason I was gutted it was chalked off is because it was Izzy. He deserved a goal."

After Jason Demetriou scored an own goal, Sam Winnall netted twice in a minute to take his tally to 24 for the season and four in his last two matches.

His head coach said: "Sam is coming into goal-scoring form again like he was in back in January when he won Player of the Month. That's important because, when he scores, we generally win games."

Heckingbottom took off Winnall midway through the second half then removed the other starting striker Ashley Fletcher with defender Aidy White coming on. That meant stand-in right-back Josh Scowen could move into his usual position of midfield as the Reds changed from 4-4-2 to 4-5-1.

Heckingbottom said: "We just wanted to consolidate the 3-0 lead. You could see Sam was flagging after 65 minutes. We wanted him to save those minutes because his legs might be vital on Thursday. We took Fletch off when Walsall were throwing everything at us and they had got in behind us a couple of times which we didn't want. It was important we made a change to tighten it up and give us control of the ball again and let us see it out."
