DEMOLITION is well underway on Shambles Street and edges closer towards Barnsley Library.

The library and adjacent shops are being flattened to make way for a new Barnsley College sixth form building.

The upper floor of the parade of shops has already been removed and workmen were yesterday tackling the lower floor, from the top end working towards the library.

One lane of Shambles Street and St Mary's Place will be closed next weekend, July 26 and 27, and for the following two weekends. It will be closed for traffic heading into town from Town End, with a diversion in place, but traffic will still be able to head out of town.

Demolition is due to be completed by August 22.
