BARNSLEY Libraries will be ending the book collection service at Silverdale Community Centre in Monk Bretton as people ‘have not been making use of the service’.

The service will end on Wednesday.

Councillor Margaret Sheard said she is disappointed that the service will not carry on but said not enough people have been using it.

She said: “We closed the library around three years ago at Monk Bretton and we moved the book collection to the community centre to keep books available.

“However, the take up of books wasn’t enough.

“We have advertised it a lot including in our community newsletter but it didn’t really seem to do much.

“I am disappointed but there isn’t much else that could be done. Lots of people seem to be using Kindles, their phones, iPads and other things to read nowadays.”

Those using the book collection service can return their books to any other library.

The end of the service was announced in December following a review of library services across the borough as the council looked to save £850,000 from its libraries budget. Changes to opening hours were also brought in at other libraries.
