DICKIE Bird has been honoured with a lifetime achievement award at the Yorkshire Awards 2017.

The former cricket umpire from Barnsley attended the ceremony on Friday night at the Hilton Leeds City Hotel, which recognises outstanding achievement in and around the region over the last 12 months.

Dickie told the Chronicle: “I’m absolutely delighted to have received this award.

“It really is a huge honour. I was actually awarded Yorkshire man of the year at the same awards back in 1996, so this award can sit quite nicely with that one.

“I never would have thought that a humble boy from Barnsley would become president of Yorkshire Country Cricket Club, and then win two back-to-back championships, which was just tremendous.”
