Rich Coop was playing pool in Gawber Road WMC when he had the idea for a mobile app featuring fixtures and dates for a variety of sports.
Now more than 10,000 people have downloaded his My Sports Diary app for Apple devices like iPhone and iPad, and now other smart phones and tablets using the Android system.
It covers sports including football, cricket, rugby league, rugby union, ice hockey, formula 1, golf, darts and basketball.
Rich, 43, originally from Grimethorpe but now living near Newmillerdam, said: "It was just one of those 'light bulb moments, playing pool on a Friday night in Gawber Club.
"I was talking to a friend, I used to do some work for William Hill and he wanted me to get him a William Hill diary with all the sports fixtures in.
"I just said to him, personally, I'd rather have all that information on my phone instead, and it just came to me.
"Loads of people have a football diary, but nobody was doing an app that did all the sports.
"So you can follow Barnsley FC, Yorkshire Cricket Club, the England football team and all the Formula 1. It puts all the fixtures into your diary automatically."
The app was launched for Apple devices in September, and for the first four weeks Barnsley FC was the most followed team. But as it grew, Everton overtook Barnsley.
"Sadly, as a Barnsley fan, Manchester United has taken over now. They're number one. Barnsley has a good showing though. Lots of people follow Barnsley and Yorkshire Cricket Club."
The app has just launched on Android devices and is growing by the day.
It is free to download via iTunes or Google Play, and is paid for by banner advertising at the bottom of the page.
