A LITTLE girl who suffers from a condition similar to that of Professor Stephen Hawking is in desperate need of an electric wheelchair to help stop her spine from crushing her lungs.

Four-year-old Molly Williams was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) when she was just over a year old.

Her parents, May and Julian, of Shelley Close, Penistone, also have children Anya, six, and Edmund, two, but only Molly has the genetic condition.

It is caused by deterioration in the nerve cells connecting the brain and spinal cord to the body’s muscles.

It means Molly can’t walk, sit or support her head. She has to wear a neck brace, can’t lift her arm and her hips dislocate. At night she wears a mask which blows air into her lungs.

Molly can talk and eat, but has medication to help her swallow.
