A LOCAL councillor has demanded an apology from Shafton Parish Council after claiming that he was allowed to be ‘verbally abused’ at a public meeting during the recent election campaign.

Coun Jeff Ennis claims slanderous comments were made about him after he was confronted by a member of the public about his £13,000-per-year part-time role as a Barnsley Healthcare Federation board member at Shafton Community Centre on April 25.

Coun Ennis said comments about him receiving a ‘backhander’ were allowed to be aired in public and that the allegations were used against him to win votes in the election campaign. He won the election with 1,311 votes, beating Barnsley Independent Group’s candidate Peter Makinson, also of Shafton Parish Council, by 516 votes.
