If Barnsley FC are worried about conceding 27 goals in their first 11 league matches, they should spare a thought for Barnsley Sunday League side Largo who were beaten 28-0 by Wombwell Main in the Challenge Cup on Sunday.

It was Wombwell’s biggest ever winning scoreline and is thought to be a league record. Danny Frost’s tally of 14 goals is also a Wombwell record.

The referee decided to put Largo, who are based in Carlton and play five divisions below Main, out of their misery with 15 minutes to play.

Frost led the way with a phenomenal performance while the other striker Simon Chadburn hit a magnificent double hat-trick.Mark Hume and Pete Smith struck twice each and the other scorers were Jake Simon, Alex Fletcher, Ryan Bent and Matt Tonks.

Hemingfield-based Frost, who plays for Shaw Lane Aquaforce on Saturdays, said: “I had six at half-time and wanted to come off but someone told me Wombwell’s record is 12 goals for one player in a match so I decided to try to break that.

“The Largo lads were a credit to themselves because they could have easily walked off but every single one of them kept going until the final whistle. Their ‘keeper made some great saves and it could have been 35 or 40 nil if it wasn’t for him."

Wombwell manager Ian Woodall said: “We must have had a chance every 30 seconds and probably 40-odd shots on goal. It got a bit monotonous towards the end but we decided not to take it easy on them.”

After conceding 28 goals, Largo ‘keeper Gavin Wright said: “Wombwell were a good set of lads and they didn’t rub it in at all. They offered to buy us all a drink in the pub afterwards.”

Largo secretary Thomas Wood said: “We’re playing Athersley Rec in the Hospital Cup soon and we’ll probably lose 28-0 to them too.”

It was a goal-crazy weekend for Wombwell as their Saturday side won 8-5 at home to Thorncliffe in the County Senior League Cup. Main came back from 2-0, 4-2 and 5-4 down to take the match into extra-time then struck three goals in the added period to progress.Lee Angel and Zach Lycett hit hat-tricks and Ross Tutill struck twice.

There was another huge win in the Barnsley Sunday League as Hoyland Town Magpies battered visitors Sturdy Lads 18-1. Matthew Weirs led the way with a fantastic double hat-trick while Billy Smith struck four times and Matthew’s brother Daniel Weirs added two goals. The other scorers were Danny Evans, Thomas Doughty and Jack Hirst while Sturdy Lads scored several own goals.

In the Sheffield Senior Cup, Houghton Main had one of the best days in their history on Tuesday as they won 6-1 at higher league opposition AFC Emley.Houghton play in the County Senior League but ripped apart their Northern Counties League hosts, who once played West Ham in the FA Cup. Ashley Vickers led the way with a magnificent four goals while the other scorers were Nick Harper and Jack Waldron.

Joining Houghton in the next round of the Sheffield Senior will be Athersley Recreation, who won 6-2 at home to Millmoor Juniors on Wednesday, and Shaw Lane Aquaforce, who got a bye to the next round after opponents Swallownest pulled out.
