RENEWED calls for a permanent homeless shelter in Barnsley has been given the backing of a vicar.

Fr Stephen Race is parish priest at St Mary’s Church in the town centre.

He has welcomed calls by a number of charities who work with the homeless for a permanent hostel in the borough to provide emergency overnight accommodation.

At present Barnsley Council can only offer such accommodation, based on local availability, on the day. If this is not available, an out-of-area placement may be offered - often in Sheffield or Huddersfield.
