A SNEAK peak has been captured of the Oaks disaster memorial sculpture being lifted into place ahead of its official unveiling next month.

The striking statue has been created by local sculptor Graham Ibbeson who admits he felt a little nervous before the hefty artwork was hauled into place on Tuesday evening to take pride of place opposite the Chronicle offices on Church Street.

Graham, 65, said: “I was very nervous and anxious before it was installed, but absolutely delighted it went without an hitch.”

He is now looking forward to the unveiling event at 1.15pm on Sunday, May 7, more than 150 years after the mining disaster which claimed 383 lives.
