ACTORS are needed to bring to life scenes depicting the horrors of the Huskar Pit Disaster which marks its 180th anniversary this year.

Planning is already underway to commemorate the disaster which happened in Silkstone on July 4 1838, claiming the lives of 26 children who were drowned when freak weather caused a pit to flood.

As part of these special commemoration events, scenes from the play Profit and Loss, written to mark the 170th anniversary, will be acted out on the streets of the village ‘on promenade’ style, overseen by playwright Sylvia Le Breton.

The scenes will depict the start of the tragedy as well as the end result involving the Royal Commission on Mining and the resulting change in the law banning the employment of children under ten in mines and women and children from working underground.

Sylvia said: “We need more men than women and are particularly looking for strong actors to play the roles of Thomas and Ann Newton. First consideration will be given to those who are from or connected with Silkstone and Silkstone Common, but those from further afield will also be considered.”

Rehearsals will begin after Easter and hopefully will only involve Wednesday evenings.
