A DEDICATED Neighbourhood Watch volunteer, a former firefighter, a leader of education, a tax collector and a legend of stage and screen were among the local figures recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Brian Blessed, who was born in Mexborough and grew up in Goldthorpe, has been appointed OBE for services to the arts and charity. He said it had been a a ‘complete surprise’ and was ‘absolutely delighted’.

“It is marvellous that the son of a Yorkshire coal miner should be given such an honour.”

John Hallows, 78, was awarded the British Empire Medal for voluntary service to law and order through his role with Barnsley Neighbourhood Watch.

He has devoted more than 40 years of voluntary service to the safety of vulnerable people and communities.

“I was very surprised, just gobsmacked, said John, of Riber Avenue, Athersley South.

“It’s a huge honour, I’ve no idea who nominated me but I’m very humbled. I do think it raises the profile of the work we do.”
