Angus MacDonald netted an injury-time leveller for Barnsley as they drew 1-1 at home to local rivals Sheffield Wednesday in a lunchtime derby at Oakwell on Saturday.

Sam Winnall, on his return to Oakwell after moving from the Reds to the Owls in January, tapped in to an empty net after a terrible mistake by former Wednesday goalkeeper Adam Davies. MacDonald levelled in the 92nd minute then the Reds had several chances to win it later on in injury-time against the play-off chasing Owls.

The Reds have now not won in seven league games but can take plenty of positives from a match in which they created the better chances and were on top for long spells.

Paul Heckingbottom made three changes to the side that lost at Norwich before the two-week international break. Saidy Janko made his first start for the club as he slotted in at right-back in place of Gethin Jones who had been struggling with illness. Marley Watkins and Adam Armstrong dropped to the bench with Ryan Kent and Alex Mowatt starting.

The first 25 minutes were very uneventful with Adam Reach and Sam Hutchinson hitting wayward long-range efforts for the Owls while Tom Bradshaw and Adam Hammill did the same for the hosts.

Hammill eventually had the first effort on target but didn't really test Kieran Westwood with a header from a cross by left-back Andy Yiadom who went off the pitch three times in the first half due to an arm injury sustained early on. Westwood then also saved easily from another header, this time from Bradshaw who met a good cross from Hammill.

Barnsley, who were marginally the better team in the first half, came closest just before the break when MacDonald flicked on a corner and former Oakwell academy player Jordan Rhodes cleared off the line.

Wednesday almost took the lead against the run of play when Josh Scowen made a mess of simple clearance in his box and Callum McManaman fired over from 15 yards out before sending another shot high of the target from further out in first half injury-time.

Yiadom had to be taken off two minutes after the interval with George Moncur coming into central midfield and Scowen moving to left-back. The goal came five minutes into the second half when Davies tried to let the ball roll out of play on the byline outside his box but Adam Reach won it from him and passed to Winnall who tapped into the empty net. The former Reds striker celebrated by running almost the length of the East Stand in front of the Barnsley supporters.

After an hour, Heckingbottom brought off Mowatt and Bradshaw for Watkins and Armstrong who played up front in a 4-4-2. Armstrong almost made an immediate impact as he was denied one-on-one by Westwood from a tight angle on the left of the box after a fantastic run and pass by Kent.

Wednesday had chances to extend their lead but Davies saved at the feet off Jordan Rhodes then gathered easily after McManaman shot straight at him. Winnall also had a second goal ruled out when he turned a Reach free-kick but was ruled offside.

MacDonald levelled when he headed in a Hammill free-kick in the 92nd minute, his first Football League goal which sparked frantic scenes on the Barnsley bench and in the stands.

The Reds came extremely close to winning it when Kent skipped past several Wednesday players on the right before crossing for Moncur whose volley was clawed out of the bottom left corner by Westwood. Morgan Fox then headed off the line from Hammill before James volleyed over after meeting a long throw by Marc Roberts.
