Chris Maguire's 96th-minute strike gave Sheffield Wednesday a dramatic win over Barnsley in a brutal derby which saw three players sent off.
The Reds had to play for more than an hour with ten men after deubutant Emmanuel Frimpong was sent off on 30 minutes for two yellow card tackles on Maguire within six minutes. The Reds defended bravely and looked likely to salvage a point when Owls substitute Jermaine Johnson scythed down Brek Shea and was given a straight red.
But Jacob Mellis became the third player to be sent off by Andre Marriner when he lunged in on Jacques Maghoma in stoppage time, a challenge clearly fuelled by frustration at not winning a penalty seconds earlier.
Reds replacement Jim O'Brien then passed the ball straight to Maguire just outside the box and the Scotsman fired in from the edge of the box to break Reds hearts and send the home fans into raptures.
Barnsley, who remain second bottom because Yeovil didn't play, started the game well and Owl Jose Semedo twice had to clear off the line.
But Frimpong's red card put the visitors on the back foot and meant Danny Wilson had to bring on Stephen Dawson for top-scorer and former Wednesday man Chris O'Grady who got a standing ovation from the home and away fans.
Wednesday failed to break down the Reds and goalkeeper Luke Steele was only really tested once until, with only 19 players left on the pitch, Maguire fired in.
Frimpong is expected to miss the home game with Ipswich next Saturday while Mellis will also be out for the trips to Doncaster and Wigan.
