Kieffer Moore would rather play alongside another striker but accepts that being a lone frontman will occasionally be his job this season.

The 26-year-old has often featured on his own up front in a 4-4-1-1 since the sale of Tom Bradshaw whose replacement Cauley Woodrow then picked up an injury from which he is yet to recover. Moore told the Chronicle: “There are games where there is a need for two strikers. Obviously it’s easier to press with two strikers. With the way we play and the way we break, sometimes you can get isolated and having another person up there would help. But I don’t make the calls, I am just happy to play.”

He added: “We haven’t seen much of Cauley but I think it will be a very good relationship. It’s always good when there are two strikers in the box, not just one.”

Striker Victor Adeboyejo, 20, was due to make his first league start for the club on Saturday but the match against Burton Albion was called off. Moore said: “I have been really impressed with Vic. He’s worked hard and he’s always in and around the box where a striker should be. He will be a very valuable asset for us.”

Head coach Daniel Stendel has said the Reds need to work on attacking and defensive set pieces, and Moore agrees. The striker said: “We’re always working on set plays and the gaffer is massive on them. It’s just not really happening for us at the minute but there will come a time when we will score three or four in a row and we will defend set pieces a lot better.”

Moore – who netted 13 goals in League One for Rotherham United last season – did not score in the first three games of this campaign. He then netted six in the next three including a hat-trick at Rochdale but has not scored in the two most recent fixtures. He said: “I think I am doing alright but I can do better. I just want to keep getting in dangerous positions, chipping in with goals and helping us get three points.

"I need to be more relentless, not allow myself to rest for a minute and keep going for the whole duration of the game. I get more attention (from defenders) and I get double- marked. I have to beat that myself and I know what I can do to escape those situations. And if I am taking defenders away there will be space for other players.

“I am never short of confidence. I knew at some stage I would do what I did last season. Now I have got the goals and I want to kick on from there. I always see myself as the number one striker, and I think every player should. If you don’t have that ego and confidence, you won’t succeed.”
