MORE than 200 houses could be built in Smithies if planning bosses give the go ahead.
Plans for 220 houses on Wakefield Road have been submitted by Tim Love, of Harworth Group which is based in Rotherham.
The application is for outline permission, and a more detailed plan will be submitted at a later date.
The site is included in the council’s Local Plan draft 2016 which provides planning policy for the future development of Barnsley up to 2033. The site is included in the plan for housing development.
A consultation was held with people living in Athersley and the wider community, and an exhibition was held in July.
The main issues for people were traffic, access to local services and in particular a lack of school places. Other concerns were around protection of trees and open spaces, and public transport.
People also wanted more modern homes, rather than traditional ones. But the style and size of the houses is a matter to be reserved.
One comment concerned an existing right of way for a resident. The plans have been updated to accommodate the right of way to existing properties. This has led to the relocation of the main access into the development, which will be further south on Wakefield Road.
The application adds: “Harworth recognises the site is located in an area which may be affected by coal mining activities and has taken this into account in the proposed development layout.”
