A MAN whose car crashed into a Barnsley pub 250 miles away from his home appeared in court on Saturday charged with the attempted murder of two young girls and two baby boys.

Owen Peter Scott, 29, of Heather Road, Fawley, Hampshire, appeared at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court on Monday and was then remanded into custody.

Scott was arrested at around 12.25am on Wednesday August 23, when a grey Dacia Logan, containing himself, two girls aged eight and seven and two boys, aged 21 months and nine-months old, crashed into the Travellers Inn pub, Oxspring.

Shortly before the crash police the car had been travelling along the A629, Copster Lane, from the direction of Thurgoland towards Hoylandswaine.

As the car approached the junction of Bower Hill and Coates Lane, it left the road and subsequently collided with the front wall of the pub.

Scott has been charged with four counts of attempted murder in relation to injuries sustained by the four children which police say are not all thought to be consistent with the collision.

A police spokesman said all the children remain in hospital where their condition is said to be serious.

At Sheffield Magistrates’ Court Scott made no plea and will remain in custody until the pre-trial preparation hearing which will take place on September 22 at Sheffield Crown Court.

Scott has also been charged with dangerous driving.
