A ‘PROLIFIC’ fly tipper known for dumping waste in Wath, Wentworth and Rawmarsh has become the first person in South Yorkshire to be jailed for the offence.

Keith Richardson, 46, was handed the sentence at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court after pleading guilty to ten offences under section 33 of the Environmental Protection Act.

Richardson, of Nelson Street, Rotherham, will serve 20 weeks in prison.

The sentencing caps a months-long saga in which he was tracked by Rotherham Council, having one vehicle seized before he purchased a second, which has also now been taken from him.

Coun Emma Hoddinott, Rotherham Council’s cabinet member for waste, roads and community safety, emphasised the council’s ‘no tolerance’ approach.

Coun Hoddinott said: “We will not tolerate people fly tipping in Rotherham.

“And will use our full powers to bring offenders to justice. I’m really pleased that the court has given a custodial sentence for this matter, which reflects the seriousness of the crime, and the impact of fly tipping on our communities.

“This sends a clear message. People who fly tip in Rotherham will be caught and will be prosecuted.”
