A BOLTON upon Dearne man has been charged with grievous bodily harm in connection with an assault on a police officer in Doncaster on Tuesday.

Dale Francis Cheetham, 22, of no fixed address but previously of Bolton upon Dearne, was arrested on Tuesday along with another man and a woman, in the Hexthorpe area of Doncaster.  

Cheetham has also been charged with two counts of robbery, two counts of possession of a bladed article, possession of an offensive weapon, aggravated vehicle taking without consent, driving whilst disqualified and driving without insurance.  

The second man arrested, Peter White, 24, of Low Road, Conisbrough has been charged with robbery. The woman arrested has been released with no further action to be taken. 

At around 5am on Tuesday, a robbery was reported and a car stolen in the Bolton area. At about 7am, a robbery was reported in Doncaster Town centre. At around 7.30am, a black Fiat Punto was in collision with a metal barrier on Cleveland Street, Doncaster, and three people were reported to have fled from the scene. 

Just before 8am, a 45-year-old male police officer was assaulted in an alleyway near Sheardown Street in Hexthorpe and suffered serious head injuries. 

He is now in a stable condition. Cheetham and White have both been remanded into custody and will appear at Barnsley Magistrates' Court this morning (Thursday).
