A MAN found dying from head injuries close to his Hoyland home last week had sustained a fall which caused his death, South Yorkshire Police confirmed.

Martin Richardson, 56, was found by a woman walking in Greenfield Road, Hoyland, early on Wednesday morning last week and despite her efforts to give first aid, he died shortly afterwards and was confirmed as dead at the scene.

South Yorkshire Police launched an investigation because it was unclear how Mr Richardson, a retired miner, had received the injury.

This week police said: “Following an investigation and post mortem examination to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the death, it has been concluded the 56-year-old died as a result of a head injury sustained during a fall.”

Police are now working to prepare a file for the coroner which will be used to explain the circumstances surrounding his death at an inquest.
