A GOLDTHORPE man has undergone lifesaving surgery - after a potentially lethal condition was discovered as he was being scanned for something else.

David Salmon, 71, says he might not be here today had it not been for the abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) screening programme.

An AAA, a symptomless and life-threatening condition, is when the aorta, the main blood vessel in the body weakens and expands. This condition, if untreated can lead to a rupture of the aorta which creates a serious risk of death due to internal bleeding.

He said: "I would definitely encourage all men aged over 65 to give the AAA screening office a ring and self-refer onto the programme; it takes ten minutes, can be done in a clinic close to your home and it could save your life."

* Men aged 65 are invited for screening by letter, but men over 65 who have not previously been screened can make an appointment by contacting the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw AAA Screening Programme by emailing dbh-tr.dbhaaa<\@>nhs.net. or calling 01709 321189.
