THE man who was found dead close to the Mandela gardens on Sunday has been named as 38-year-old Dawid Szubert.

He was originally from Poland but was living on Park Road, Barnsley. His family in Poland have been contacted by the police and continue to speak with them to provide support.

Mr Szubert was found just outside of Mandela Gardens, also known as the Civic Gardens, at around 3.05pm on Sunday by the Yorkshire Ambulance Service, after receiving a call that he had been taken ill.

He was sadly pronounced dead at the scene, at which point officers were called and an investigation was launched. A post-mortem examination carried out earlier this week revealed that he died as a result of a head injury.

In the last 24-hours a 27-year-old man from Barnsley has been arrested on suspicion of murder. He currently remains in custody where he will be questioned in connection to Mr Szubert’s death.

A 43-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder remains released under investigation while a 27-year-old man and 32-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of theft have been also been released under investigation.

DCI Steve Whittaker said: “While we have made significant progress in the investigation, I am still keen to hear from anyone who was around Mandela Gardens on Sunday afternoon and saw what happened or who saw anyone acting suspiciously.

“If you can help, please call us on 101 or speak to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111, quoting incident number 605 of June 17 2018.”
