Not enough is being done to tackle potholes in Wombwell, residents have said. A number of areas around town were named in response to the Chronicle's online campaign to find the worst blackspots. Kingsway, Brampton Road and Hough Lane by the train station were all mentioned. Brian Whitham, 47, of Kingsway, said he has had to take two weeks off work after driving over a particularly deep pothole by the train station on Saturday and trapping a nerve in his back. The lift engineer said: "I drive a van and there's no weight in it, like there would in a car, so it's not as bouncy. When I went over it, it jarred my back and trapped a nerve but if it had been someone on a motorbike, they would have been thrown off." Rob Passmore, 41, also of Kingsway, said he believed neglect had caused the numerous potholes on the street. He said: "I think it's getting to the point where it's past repair. I've lived here 12 years and I've barely seen any maintenance work done on the road. "There were a lot more potholes until I reported them a couple of weeks ago and, to be fair to the council, they were down here in a couple of days to fill them. "But they didn't fill them all and, when cars go over them, they bounce back out anyway. It's already caused damage to my van but I'm self-employed so, if that goes, I'm in trouble." Deep potholes on Brampton Road were recently covered but there remain a number of potholes at the bottom of Dove Road. Resident Albert Jackson, 72, said he feared the area was beginning to resemble a 'third world country'. He said: "I know money's tight at the moment but it needs sorting. I worked on highways for the water board before it was privatised and I know that putting Tarmac down with a bit of tar, which is how they've covering them, won't work because, once water gets under them and it freezes, it just pops up. We're getting like a third world country."
