A BARNSLEY man is lucky to be alive after falling 40ft into a quarry while he was cutting the hedge in his garden.

Alan Dewhirst, 77, was leaning over to cut the hedge at the edge of his garden at his home in Newhill Road, Smithies, when he tumbled over the other side.

He said he hit several things on the way down but his fall was broken by a tree which probably saved his life.

Alan suffered a broken pelvis, broken arm, broken ribs and a punctured lung and is recovering in hospital.

From his hospital bed at the Northern General in Sheffield, Alan told the Chronicle he was not sure how the accident happened.
