VOLUNTEERS from Yorkshire Building Society helped out at Albert’s Horse Sanctuary in Cawthorne as part of a volunteering scheme.

Eight members from the society’s Penistone branch helped the animal rescue charity with weeding, planting new flowers, putting up fences and cleaning out the stables and fields.

The day was part of Yorkshire Building Society’s volunteering scheme which allows every colleague up to 31 hours’ paid leave a year to help out at a charity or a good cause of their choice.

Laura Fozard, manager of the society’s Penistone branch, said: We loved helping out at Albert’s Horse Sanctuary even if it was a bit more physically demanding than our usual day jobs.

“We passionately believe in being part of our community and giving something back.”

Albert’s Horse Sanctuary, on South Lane, is a family run charity and was founded in 2005 by Mary Hepworth, her husband John and their daughters Stacey and Mary-Anne.

It is now home to more than 40 animals including horses, donkeys, sheep, pigs, goats, ducks, hens and cats.

Stacey said: “The team of volunteers worked really hard and thanks to their help we’ve been able to really get on top of some jobs that we were struggling to cope with.”
