A FORMER Barnsley resident who still visits Morrison’s every week for her lunch will turn 107-years-old tomorrow.
Margaret Hammond, who now lives at a care home in Normanton in West Yorkshire, was born on High Street in Wombwell to Harold and Clara Shevill and was the eldest of four children.
She later moved to Pearson’s Field in Wombwell in 1915 and attended Barnsley Road Infant School and then later John Street School.
After leaving school, Margaret worked at the Co-Op restaurant on Market Street in town and later moved to work at a tailor’s shop, still in the town centre.
Margaret married Noel Leslie Hammond - known as Les who was a bass baritone singer - at St Mary’s Church in Wombwell in 1936 and the pair first lived on Highstone Lane in Ward Green, then moved to Clarendon Street in Barnsley and then Warner Avenue, Pogmoor.
Together they had children Bill, Bob, Maggie and Lynda before Les died in 1999.
Lynda, Margaret’s daughter, said: “She gets regular visits from her family and she is always ready for a laugh and a joke with the care staff, in fact, she’s one of the favourite residents.
“Mum will be joining all the family at my home for a garden party on Sunday, weather permitting, if not we’ll all be off down to the local Chinese restaurant.
“She loves a Chinese meal out but not yet mastered the chop sticks yet.”
