A MARKET trader who still sets up her stall every day at the age of 90 was a runner-up in a global awards ceremony.

Joan Ward, of Daleswood Avenue, Barnsley, works on her fruit and veg stall, Fred Ward’s, in Wath’s Value for Money Market.

The 90-year-old works 50 hours a week in the market and runs the entire stall single-handedly. She wakes up at 6.30am and begins her day at the market at 8am where she spends her day until 4pm, but she says it’s something she enjoys doing and can’t imagine stopping.

Joan was a runner-up in the global hearing specialist’s Amplifon Awards for Brave Britons 2019, in the Active Agers category. She received her award from the Duke of Kent at a ceremony hosted by Falklands War hero Simon Weston in London.

Speaking about being a runner-up, Joan said: “It was a fantastic day at the Amplifon awards and meeting the Duke of Kent was exciting. All of the finalists were special people and all were real heroes and it was a privilege to be amongst them.”

She was joined at the awards by her daughters Cate Ward and Ghislaine Burnham.

Joan works six days a week and her tasks still involve dragging around sacks of potatoes and driving her pick-up van.

The Active Agers category was won by 81-year-old Scottish marathon cyclist Mavis Patterson who earlier this year rode from Land’s End to John O’Groats, raising £70,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.
