A YOUNG mathematician who was recognised nationally for her ability has been nominated for a Young Champions award.

Karina Bryant, 14, of Gerald Walk, came top of the maths category last year in the United Learning’s National Best in Everyone Secondary Awards.

The Barnsley Academy pupil was nominated by her teachers for her commitment to maths and for her enthusiasm to take on increasingly difficult challenges.

She beat hundreds of applicants to come first and since then she continues to push herself mathematically, much to the delight of her father, Peter.

He said: “When I was younger I took my O Level maths a year early so being good with numbers runs naturally within our family.

“Karina has always shown a keen interest in maths and she is always pushing herself to do better and, as a parent, it makes me proud.

“To hear she has been nominated for a Young Champions award is a fantastic achievement.

“It just shows how committed she is to reaching her potential and working to the best of her ability.”
