AN ESTATE which provides supported living to Barnsley’s elderly population has unveiled its renovation which it is hoped will help prevent social isolation.
The common room at Hanover Court in Worsbrough Bridge had its first major refurbishment since the property was opened in 1990, and residents were invited to take in the new surroundings.
Mayor of Barnsley Coun Steve Green was at the room’s grand opening on Wednesday and chatted with staff and residents.
Estate manager Lucy Vaines, 34, said: “It’s brighter now, it was really dark with dark green carpets and old furniture but we’ve got this lovely wallpaper and new furniture now.
“It needed a refurb anyway but it was also a push to get residents more involved and give them somewhere to get together. It helps to prevent isolation and gets them out of their rooms.
“And it has worked to get more residents coming to social events. They use it quite a lot, we have coffee and quiz afternoons.”
While the properties undergo modifications to suit individual residents’ needs, the new common room is the first large-scale renovation to take place at the estate in Worsbrough in more than 20 years.
Lucy said the area was important to continue to give the residents more independence.
“Hanover Court isn’t a care home,” she added. “The residents are independent and have got their own flats, and myself and the staff are just there if they need anything.”
