Oliver McBurnie's 93rd-minute equaliser meant Barnsley drew 2-2 at home to fellow relegation battlers Bolton Wanderers on Saturday.

The Reds led with ten minutes remaining following Gary Gardner's first half strike but George Moncur conceded a controversial penalty which Wanderers scored before taking the lead.

McBurnie's late strike means the Reds are still 22nd, two points behind Bolton who are 21st but have played a game more than Barnsley.

Head coach Jose Morais made only one change from the 1-0 defeat at Ipswich Town on Tuesday, with George Moncur returning from illness to replace Lloyd Isgrove.

Very little happened in the opening 20 minutes as Bolton began on top but then faded. The first goal came midway through the first half when former Barnsley goalkeeper Ben Alnwick dropped what should have been simple catch from an Adam Hammill corner then, after Oliver McBurnie had two shots cleared off the line, Gardner smashed into the top left corner from 15 yards.

Bolton had their first shot on 37 minutes when Adam Davies saved well from Sammy Ameobi who let loose from a tight angle on the right then, at the other end, McBurnie curled just wide of the top right corner from 20 yards.

Centre-back Adam Jackson came off injured at half-time and was replaced by Ethan Pinnock while Bolton went to 4-4-2 with Reece Burke being replaced by Will Buckley, who cross for Antonee Robinson to fire a decent chance wide from 15 yards within two minutes of the restart.

Bolton nearly levelled through David Wheater but the centre-back's header from a right-wing corner was headed off the line by home captain Andy Yiadom.

Kieffer Moore missed a fine chance for 2-0, heading over a right-wing cross by Hammill then Moncur and McBurnie both shot straight at Alnwick within seconds of each other after a fine run by Moncur.

Adam Le Fondre then fired over twice from long-range but scored a much easier chance from the penalty spot in the 82nd-minute after Moncur was booked for bringing down a visiting player from a corner.

It was 2-1 three minutes later when Yiadom cleared a right-wing cross but then crashed into goalkeeper Davies and the net was almost totally unguarded as Craig Noone smashed in.

But McBurnie got the leveller from almost on the line after Hammill's left wing corner was flicked on by Moore and nodded in.
