PARENTS are being asked to check their children have had the full course of MMR vaccine following a measles outbreak.

As many as 28 cases have been confirmed in Leeds, 18 in Liverpool, 13 in Birmingham, seven in Surrey and four in Manchester.

All of the cases have been reported in children and adults who have not received two doses of the MMR vaccine.

Measles is a highly infectious viral illness which can sometimes lead to serious complications.

Children and young people who have not received two doses of the vaccine are at risk of contracting this infectious disease, and unvaccinated people travelling to Romania, Germany and Italy, where there are currently large outbreaks of measles, are at high risk.

The vaccine is available to all adults and children who are not up to date with their two doses. Anyone who is not sure if they are fully vaccinated should check with their GP practice.

A council spokesman said the outbreak serves as an important reminder for parents to take up the offer of MMR vaccination for their children at one year of age and as a pre-school booster at three years and four months of age.
