AGE UK Barnsley’s Men in Sheds project has joined Barnsley Council to design bespoke furniture.

The partnership will mean that there will be items designed for the events room and roof terrace at the Library @ the Lightbox.

The Men in Sheds group aim to support men aged 50 and over who may have experienced life-changing events such as redundancy, retirement, bereavement and mental or physical ill-health.

The sessions allow residents to come together to have a chat over tea and biscuits while learning new skills such as woodworking, IT and art.

The team will use their valuable skills to create a set of 12 handmade benches and six tables to suit the vibrant and fun interior of the events space.

Wendy Lowder, executive director for communities, said: “This is a great opportunity to showcase the talents of volunteer groups that we have in Barnsley. We’re delighted that the Men in Sheds have devoted their hard work and time to support the build of the Library @ the Lightbox, it will be a great addition to the events space and will certainly add character we can all enjoy.”
