MICHELLE Clegg has struggled with depression and anxiety in her life.

She has recovered, with the help of a number of therapies and courses, many of which were at the Barnsley Recovery College.

Now, Michelle volunteers at the college, and is helping others recover from their mental illnesses.

She was awarded the Distinguished Learner of the Year Award whilst in recovery, but has now been nominated for Volunteer of the Year at the Proud of Barnsley Awards.

The college on Gawber Road offer a number of courses to promote mental well-being, such as seminars to help sufferers understand their diagnosis’ and self-management strategies. The college also offers workshops on how to function better in daily life, such as confidence and communication builders, and managing stress.

Michelle, 31, of Lockeaflash Crescent, Kendray, said: “I was initially a sufferer with depression and anxiety, and started out as a learner at the college. When I was doing an advanced course, they saw that I was good at making decisions and was supportive towards the other learners. They then asked me to help in future courses.”

“I was in recovery for 8-12 months, and I’ve now been volunteering for seven months. The college saved my life, and saw potential in me. I’d now like to help people where I can, inspire people, and give something back to the college.”
