Matt Mills and Nick Townsend will be released at the end of the season, while the Reds know it will be difficult to keep captain Andy Yiadom and the future of Adam Hammill is uncertain.

Those are the only out-of-contract senior players at Oakwell this summer as well as goalkeeper Jack Walton, 20, who made an impressive debut on Tuesday and is expected to be offered a new deal.

Veteran centre-back Mills signed a six-month deal in January but has played just four games, while goalkeeper Townsend is out for the season after breaking a finger in a training ground 'fight' with defender Dimitri Cavare.

Winger Adam Hammill is one of the longest-serving and most popular players at the club while right-back Yiadom is likely to have plenty of offers from other clubs after almost moving earlier in the season.

Chief executive Gauthier Ganaye told the Chronicle: "We are not offering a new contract to Nick Townsend or Matt Mills. I have tried to offer Andy Yiadom a new contract nearly every day since I came here. We have given him several proposals but he has not accepted any so far, which I can understand. We will see what happens with Hammill at the end of the season."

The Reds will also be looking to offload several other first teamers who are still under contract in the summer and bring in some new recruits.

"We have a Championship plan and a League One plan, for recruitment. The money would not be the same but most of our players are under contract and all of those players have clauses in their contract in case of relegation. It is not as if the squad is a shambles."
