A WOMAN who was inspired by the strength and courage of a friend diagnosed with breast cancer is hoping to have raised £1,500 for the chemotherapy ward at Barnsley Hospital.

Emma Gibson organised a 10k walk from Athersley Rec to Locke Park and back again, in which 19 people took part including Miss South Yorkshire International, Nadia King.

Barnsley Central MP Dan Jarvis cheered them on as they set off. Emma, 34, of Upper Forest Road, Athersley North, became emotional as she said: "I lost my auntie 14 years ago to cancer. I saw her through all of that, and then my friend was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago.

"She has been amazing. You wouldn't even think that she'd had cancer. She's so strong, she's a fighter and has never let it put her down."

Emma said the group received lots of support from passing drivers, and a fun day was held at Athersley Rec when they returned. Sponsor money is still being collected.
