George  Moncur can understand the Barnsley fans' discontent at the team's performances and admits he has been frustrated not to have played more under Jose Morais.

But the midfielder insists the Reds will get enough points from their remaining eight matches to survive in the Championship this season. After hearing the side booed off following the 2-0 loss to Millwall on Saturday, Moncur told the Chronicle: "I can understand why the fans aren't happy.

"Our home form hasn't been the best but we have enough quality in our team to stay in the league so hopefully we will get the wins we need in the weeks to come. We need to perform because there are only eight games left and we need to look to win them all."

Moncur played in 29 of the 34 matches this season under Paul Heckingbottom but, after the head coach moved to Leeds United last month, his replacement Jose Morais had only given the 25-year-old one 12-minute substitute appearance in his first six matches.

Moncur came on at half-time against Millwall and impressed almost instantly with some good forward runs and forced goalkeeper Jordan Archer into one of several good saves.

"I am obviously frustrated not to have played that much but you have to rely on what the manager thinks and then, when your time comes, you have to perform."Hopefully I did enough against Millwall to get some more games. I like Jose, he's good. He's different to what I have been used to but his methods are very precise. I am sure he will be good when he has more time and he gets to know the players more."

After Millwall went 2-0 ahead, Morais changed to what appeared to be a 4-1-5 formation with Moncur the only midfielder. He said: "That's when you are chasing the game and you need to score. Formations and stuff, that's all up to the gaffer and, whatever he wants, you just have to go out there and try to do it."

Moncur, who signed for Barnsley from Colchester United in 2016 after the Essex club's relegation to League Two, is desperate not to go down again.

"I think we will get out of it. I am a confident person myself and all the other boys are as well. We definitely have enough quality but it's about performing on the day and we need to do that in the last eight games. You want to play at the highest level you can and there are loads of players in that dressing room that are capable of playing higher. We know what we have to do."
