A NEW package of traffic regulations have been approved around the busy junction at Cundy Cross which has recently undergone a major modernisation scheme.

Cundy Cross roundabout was removed by Barnsley Council and replaced with traffic lights earlier this year.

Work is progressing to create a new access road for a housing development on the site of the old Priory School, which will effectively form a new gyratory for traffic in the area.

But because the area is so busy, Barnsley Council is introducing new regulations for traffic to govern waiting on the approaches to the junction to keep traffic flowing.

The changes were subject to criticism when they were first introduced, with motorists facing long delays at the junction, but the council’s ruling cabinet was told the traffic controls are now working smoothly, though there is heavy traffic in the area during the morning and evening rush hours.

However, it is expected that traffic flow will improve further when the new access road is completed and opened, with the traffic control measures intended to help keep the flow moving as quickly and smoothly as possible.
